At exactly noon, the sun is at the highest point in the sky. It is possible to draw an imaginary great circle around the earth at that moment which is called a meridian. Any time before noon is ante meridian (AM) and any time after noon is post meridian (PM) where ante is before and post is after. It is actually wrong to say 12 AM or 12 PM which should be called 12 noon and 12 midnight to avoid confusion. How can 12 noon be before or after noon?

AM is ante meridiem, Latin for before noon, where noon is the time that the Sun is directly overhead. PM is post meridiem, or after noon. Standardizing time zones confuses this a little.
