Try going to the website of the manufacturer, find the model of your printer/scanner, and click on Troubleshooting or Help. It might take a little while, but usually you can find out and fix what's wrong with it without having to call anyone.

Did you load the drivers for the printer? If you don't have the Cd that came with the printer, go to the manufacturer's web site and you can download them from there.
