Basically I don't want people seeing my IP address or locate me just by looking through who is using a public network.

As far as IP go, they can trace you to the provider of the connection, when you log on to a wireless network, the router assigns you an IP addy. It will be a different IP most likely every time you log on unless you are on a home network. For protection, turn off file and print sharing and use some form of antivirus and adware protection. You can also enable your firewall. In ANY event, dont use P2P sites! once you have downloaded their software, you are no longer immune to malware!

Use a software firewall on your machine. But keep in mind that your wireless stream can easily be captured and read since it is not encrypted.

You can't help the IP part. but you can use a firewall like Windows Firewall.
