He is the love of my life. It has been the best of times and the worst of times. We almost divorced 5 months ago. He spent 5 years trying to give me a child I always wanted even though he did not want kids. He was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's Disease at age 38, two months before our daughter was born via a surrogate mother. He is financially successful and it is very difficult to to buy him gifts because he doesn't really need much and he always prefers that I don't spend a lot of money. I don't know how to let him know how much I appreciate and adore him. He is going through a difficult time in his life from every angle

WOW! That sounds like you guys have been through a LOT. Since he has early onset of Parkinsons, I think whatever you get him should be something along the lines of making FANTASTIC memories together. As the years go by, he might not be able to do some of the things he can do right now, so it might mean a lot to him now AND later as he looks back at pictures, to have something like the first girl's answer of a weekend in Vegas, or a small hike trip in the Appalachians or closeby wherever you're from. I think this will be one of those things where you can apologize LATER for spending a little extra, and he'll be so happy with the great memories that he'll realize it was worth it. This might sound sappy, but why don't you watch a few of those "dating" shows like Bachelor or something, and kinda soak in some of the romantic things they do that seem to appeal to both the man and woman--and then arrange it. Congratulations. I've been married 9 years and wasjust thinking about what we'll do next year. Make great memories!

Wow, firstly,hoo-ah to all you both have gone through. This is a problem i also have with my husband, I put a lot of thought into my gifts for my husband, you know I make my own cards and I try to get something that truly shows him that I care. *sigh* but he's a guy. He wants something with buttons on it. He wants a remote control car, a lego set, you know, guys are kids in disguise. You know an airplane model or something. It shows him that you love him and that you are also interested in what he likes ... and also that you have a sense of humor and are not always sentimental... (even if you really are... lol) i know it sounds stupid but stick to food, lingerie and toys... I'm telling you they don't want that other stuff....

Get a babysitter, cook him his favorite dinner,The two of you take a candle light bubble bath, Go in the bedroom and give him a nice long total body massage while listening to his favorite soft music, then, you know what comes next.Try new things and let him experiment with different ways. That way you are both getting something you enjoy on your anniversary. Good Luck!

People frequently ask me if I can think of some examples of a particular kind of gift. Most often, the question is about paper as a first anniversary gift. Here are some ideas:

Nice writing paper, cards, etc. -- basically, any kind of paper that you write on. If this doesn't seem like enough, you can always include a nice pen.
Books. Big coffee-table books, antique books, the latest novels -- any kind of books.
Fine art or photography prints (to hang on the wall). Many newlyweds don't have much hanging on their walls.
A photo album, or a framed picture.
Anything made of cardboard -- you can stretch the definition of paper if you want to.

Tickets to the theater, sporting event, etc.
A gift certificate -- homemade or commercial

something small and simple, possibly engraved that will help him remember you... maybe an engraved symbol that you both love. ie: my husband and i make "fishy out of water" faces at each other when we feel hurt (lame i know). but one thing i might do is get something he can carry with him at all times, like an engraved fish. A small poem he can carry with him. A picture of something extremely wonderful you two have done together. A trip you can take together to somewhere quiet with a unique aspect to it. When i am broke (different situation, but could still apply) I give him a good present and then "favor cards" One night of ..one day of peace, one week of back rubs, one romatic dinner at a surprise location...i dont know if this helps but good luck, and sorry about the lack of punctuation.

Is there something that you've been joking about getting? Or something like an inside joke between you two? Get something funny or you could get like a vacation somewhere for you guys. A trip somewhere.
