If it is an actual cold (as opposed to either a bacterial infection or walking pneumonia) then zinc supplementation has been proven to cut the duration of the cold in half. That's roughly the same efficacy as an antibiotic has on a bacterial infection. Results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine a few years ago.

Halls makes a cough drop that is both pleasant tasting and has a significant amount of zinc in it.

Coldeze is great for shortening the duration of your cold, it doesn't interact with anything, it is homeopathic and really works. Also anything with vitamin C. Plus the usual cold remedies to deal with the symptoms.

Throat & nose spray is all I need, though Pepto Bismol or Immodium should be taken at the 1st sign of a cold to prevent "sneezing sharts," when you get the runs & a sneeze makes you crap your pants (no, it's never happened to me or my GF Iris)!
