YES. READ THE BOOK "GROW UP AND OUT OF DYSFUNCTION". IT TALKS ABOUT HOW DYSFUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS AE THE LEGACY THAT KEEPS GETTING PASSED ON. IT TALKS ABOUT HOW KIDS LEARN HOW TO BEHAVE FROM THEIR PARENTS, WHO IGNORANTLY EXPOSE THEIR KIDS TO THEIR OWN DYSFUNCTION (NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE BAD PEOPLE, BUT BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER BECAUSE THAT'S HOW THEY WERE TAUGHT). YOU CAN STOP THE CYCLE NOW, BY SELF DICOVERY AND LOOKING AT YOUR FAMILY FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE. YOU HAVE SO MUCH MORE CONTROL OVER THIS THAT YOU WOULD BELIEVE.
THE BAGGAGE PEOPLE CARRY ALWAYS CONTAMINATES FUTURE AS WELL AS EXISTING RELATIONSHIPS. YOU JUST HAVE TO LEARN TO DISCOVER WHAT'S IN YOUR BAG, WHY, AND HOW TO LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD. IT SOUNDS SIMPLE, BUT IT ISN'T. BUT IT IS WELL WORTH IT.
IT IS ONLY HARD, BECAUSE SOME THINGS ARE TOO DIFFICULT OR TOO PAINFUL TO ADMIT TO. THAT, AND OUR SELF PRESERVATION MAKES US "RIGHT" IN OUR OWN MINDS. WE TEND TO DEFEND OUR ACTIONS, EVEN IF THEY ARE SELF DESTRUCTIVE. THIS IS WHY SOME PEOPLE ARE RESISTANT TO ANY TYPE OF THERAPY.
IF THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM, ASK YOURSELF "WHAT IF...." WHEN LOOKING AT THINGS FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE.
ASK YOURSELF WHAT THE PAYOFFS ARE, FOR YOUR CURRENT BEHAVIOR.
TAKE CARE!

There is some literature suggesting that we continually make the same bad choices over and over. Recognizing the pattern is the first step to overcoming the problem.
A person who only knows dysfunctional relationships has to work extra hard to avoid them. Identifying those dysfunctional patterns is the key.
If you are asking about someone you know and are thinking about becoming involved with, mention this idea and see the reaction. Is this person willing to work on it?
If you are describing yourself, get counseling.

I think yes, sometimes. Growing up in a dysfunctional home we learn to accept, unacceptable behavior, abuse, emotional, physical, mental, sexual.Therapy and lots of awareness does help. Though then there are many people who came from dysfunctional homes and they seek the oposite. It just depends,we are all different.

I think so because I was one who grew up in a dysfunctional home. I think we put up with a lot more because we do not know what a loving family really is. I am not saying my husband is not a good loving man he is but sometimes he does things that drive me crazy (like every marriage) and I put up with it.

Sometimes, usually that is because even the most dysfunctional family had good times, and that is what they want for themselves, the happiness.

Not always. I think if it is way too dysfunctional then maybe, but we were borderline and I am so so happy. I just divorced an alcoholic turned drug addict

it can go either way....sometimes the dysfunctional can feel like home...other times the person wants to get away from all of it. it just depends on the person.
