It depends on what you are guaging by "ahead" but rom a personal opinion, yes!

German cars are much more reliable, much more feature packed, more more economical and much more ahead in technical advances in comparison to American cars.

No wonder they are one of the only few countries which still have a car industry.

According to OICA (The International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers) statistics of 2005, Germany does produce more cars than America.

Considering Volkwagen offers a diesel 4 cylinder engine that is tried & true and can get up to 50 mpg NOW, I think they are ahead of the US & Japan. Ethanol (US focus) will be good, but is still down the road till it will be widely available. Japan (Hybrid gas/electric focus) may work in JAPAN, but in America most people drive highways & long stretches of road, so we will never get the benefits that type of 'stop & go' needing car takes to be efficient.

Yes,Ive been a mechanic for the past 20 years and have noticed a very high quaility of workmanship and design in my Mercedes compared to American cars.It seems like a lot of parts on american cars are built with the old snap together model frame of mind.(cheap plastic parts that break easy) whereas Mercedes designed their cars to be a good product .It seems like for the last 30 years Detroit has been trying to build cheap junk to rip off their customer. After all this time I'm not sure they'll ever change.

yes actually they are,, i own a repair shop,,and i get more American cars to repair than German built cars,,and the quality of the parts i buy is greater than that of the American cars,, i love American cars don't get me wrong,,but when i buy a car i wont it to last,,and i want to be able to sell it,,and at least break even on it,,or make a few dollars,,and i cant do it on American cars,,they go down hill really fast,,and when they do give a problem,,its usually a major one,,so far all i have found with the German technology is good service,,and low cost repair,,and minor at that,,until we get to the point where we can build a car that will last like those will,,we have to settle for being second best,,if we actually rank there right now,,i still believe in American cars though,,i own 3 of them,,and will continue to do so,,but I'm a mechanic,,and i have the ability to repair my own vehicles,,if weren't for that ,,id probably own a different kind,,but good or bad,,i,ll always support the American built ones,,good luck,,i hope this help,s

Yes. I lived there for almost 4 years because my dad is in the army and moving back to the states 3 months ago it was odd to see not everyone driving a BMW, smart car, Benz, or a volkswagon as almost all germans drive. SUVs don't exist over there, unless of course your American.
