Sounds like a cracked head - time for a new car.
The gas mileage on my dad's 1988 Colt Premier plummeted to 20 MPG from 35-40 MPG due to leaking coolant. While my father was able to coax a few more months from the car, things became hopeless when the car hit 147,000 miles.

Get rid of it. You will never make it fuel efficient. To increase the economy a little make sure all your tires are properly inflated, take anything you are hauling around thet you really don't need out of the back, con't carry anything on top of the vehicle, always drive the speed limit, coast as much as possible - if you are coming up to a red light, don't drive to it and hit the brakes, coast to it and, if it turns green before you get there, speed up gently.

due to the displacement of your engine there isnt much you can do with fuel consumption unless it is running rich which you can tell by the colour of your exhaust emmisions if it is black its running rich but a 4litre engine will take a lot of fuel to run i own an impreza turbo it does around 20mpg at best and 5 mpg at its worst but there aint much you can do about it apart from buy a smaller engined car
