You will need a passport starting January 8, 2007 for any air and sea travel or starting January 1, 2008 for all entry to the US, but until then all you need is proof of your citizenship and a photo ID.

I am a US citizen. I was just in Canada in July and I did not have a passport. I used my drivers license and birth certificate. However it is true what the man said before that it will soon be mandatory. But for now I experienced no problems without one. P.S. If you decide to get one plan ahead because it takes awhile to get it unless you want to pay more$$$ to speed the process up.

No, you can still go with Picture ID and birth certificate. But it is so much easier with a passport. Get it now, I find the closer it is to winter, the crazier the passport office is. Go to any travel agent or post office and they have the forms. Get your picture and find someone to sign for you, take it all down to passport office. Its about 85 dollars now to get one.

It will soon be mandatory to have a passport to go to the USA from Canada. It is currently STRONGLY recommended to have one, and you may find inconvenience at the border/customs if you don't have one.
