You should ask at least a month in advanced. I've asked instructors for a letter that was due in a couple days, but I don't recommend this at all.

It should be done now well before applying for a particular college. A person should approach the individual teacher first before considering them for a college recommendation. There are teachers who might feel uncomfortable about giving one out. Also, it can be a chance to find out what the teacher thinks about the subject to see if the recommendation would be a perfect fit for the application process. A perfect fit would be someone who might know about your knowledge about the field, your interests, attended and/or graduated from the particular college, and possibly someone who has mentored you in the past. I forgot to mention is please do not wait until the last minute on the recommendations or the college applications because it is a good way to miss the deadline.

As far in advance as possible.

Start off by asking your teacher I'm starting the application process for colleges and was wondering if you could write a recommendation.

Once you decided on what schools to apply to, tell that teacher if they said yes to a recommendation which schools you are applying to and what the application deadlines are. When there is two weeks before the deadline ask the teacher if they have written the recommendation yet. If not mention it to them everyday because you don't want to be penalized for them not getting something in on time.

As far back as you can. Then just remind them before you're about to apply.
