Why can't I decide when I need some valium? Its my body my choice and if I pay for it I should be able to take it!! If you say that you can't because the drug is bad for you then why is a Dr. prescribing me a dangerous drug ( when they do prescribe it )? I can smoke and drink if I want to which is horrible for my health so whats the big deal?

From personal experience, sometimes when a doctor prescribes for you, it is just as dangerous. You may be allergic to the prescribed drug and the doctor would be none the wiser until it is too late.

I have been given medicine recommended by more than one doctor and found myself running back for antihistamines. On one occasion, I fell asleep at work and could not awaken until around 9 pm that night. It was after my sister - who is a nurse - heard what I had taken, she stopped me, telling me it was a dangerous drug, although my doctor meant well.

On another occasion, my dentist gave me an anesthetic and my blood pressure skyrocketed, my heart began to palpitate and beat like a loud drum and the veins in my head were so engorged that I thought I was going to die.

My point is that they, too, do not always know what is best for us, however, they do know better than we who are not medically qualified to dose up ourselves.

You can decide...you don't have to follow the doctors orders if you feel it's bad for you. Find a doctor that has the same beliefs as you do. Doctors don't know everything. Maybe you would be more comfortable following other approaches to your health. You don't have to take prescription meds...a lot of people believe they aren't good for you, that herbs and other things made by the earth is better for you. Do what you feel is right for you and your body.

Because doctors have extensive medical training to know when it is necessary for a patient to have certain drugs. You may think you need one medication, when you need something COMPETELY different, or no prescription medication at all! Doctors make hundreds of thousands of dollars because they (typically) know what they're talking about from hours and hours and hours of training and internship.

Because, as bad as smoking and drinking are, they will not in themselves kill you outright. Doctors (and pharmacists) know the actions and interactions a drug could cause, and how it is likely to affect, at least immediately.
