The Conservative party is the largest party in the UK as far as public membership. The Tories are typically sceptic of Europe and support atlanticism. This would mean closer ties with the US, would it not?

i know seats are different than public membership, but it does show that the largest political party by population in the UK is the conservatives

maybe not 'closer' ties per se, that might be a bit though to do, but ties on the same level as they are now

Has he changed his mind?

I don't think anyone could be closer to Bush than Blair is, which is quite odd for a labour PM, but when you consider the troubles of the world both leaders have had to deal with, it is no wonder they are as close as they are.

I feel the basis of your question is probably steeped in history. We have always counted the USA to be our greatest ally, quite rightly so. We have so little in common with the rest of Europe it is untrue, so why we keep associating ourselves even deeper into the EU, is a complete mystery to me.

So, to answer your question, I don't think it matters one way or the other, which party is in power, we will always see the Americans as our greatest friends.

I doubt the validity of the statement that the Tories are the largest party as far as public membership is concerned. I do know that a helluva lot of people are told to vote Tory or lose the job and home, enquire in the country farming areas and I think you get confirmation of this.
As far as policy is concerned on Europe, do you remember a guy called Edward Heath who persuaded the country to enter the common market which of course led us to the European Commission and it's legend of cohorts and hangers on of well padded cushy jobs who take a delight in dreaming up wild ideas to fleece us out of more taxes to take more control of Brittain.. Dare the Tories renege on their past legion of leaders who have fawned upon the bureaucrats of Europe to further their nests, I dont think so.
Admittedly the Conservative party is more associated with the Republican party of U.S.A than the Labour party who are course akin to the Democratic party, but I don.t think Bush will be forever in power. So that is very much a moot point.

Well, it depends on what the conservative UK party's position on the war is. Because of Bush and Blair's agreement on that one issue---and pretty much on nothing else---there has been lots of ties between the US and UK since 9/11. Many conservatives have taken the anti-war stance, as far as I have followed, and if an anti-war conservative came in, relations could weaken. No?

For a con PM to be closer to the US than the poodle he would have to be giving the shrub oral sex.

If what you say about membership is true why does Labour have a 40 something seat majority in the commons?

I see your point but i feel the conservatives would try and get back some of our independence while keeping firm ties with the US.

I cannot imagine a time when the US and UK will not be close friends, between our government and the people.

To lose that would be disastrous for both.
