LOL means Laugh Out Loud. It is an acronym and not an abbreviation..

(LOL is not an emoticon, an emoticon is a representation of an emtion through the use of charcaters avaialble on the keyboard typically creating a face when looked at sideways. e.g. :-) )

I use the following website to decipher acronyms.

The posters above are correct. LOL or lol of course means laughing out loud and is not an emoticon, which are the funny pictures made with the things like this ;~)

But I wanted to add my favorite site, because I am an old lady who does not know any of these things and this is a place that has a list of a lot of the chat abbreviations everyone here uses and that are used for texting on cell phones. This way I know what people are saying and I don't feel so stupid sometimes!!

BTW, my favorite is IPN -- LOL!!!

Later!!

Lol means laughing out loud. You say it when something is funny. An emoticon is a little smiley or frowney or something that you type in. Examples: :-) *smiling face*
:-( *frowning face* :'-( *crying face* ;-) *winking face*

"lol" isn't an emoticon, it's an abbreviation for "laughing out loud" or "lots of laughs" depending on whether or not you learned it from AOL or just the Internet in general.
