It depends on your style... If your a beginner, get a plastic ball.. I recommend the viz-a-ball series cuz you can get just about any design from sports teams to cartoon characters, so they're a lot of fun... However, if your a more advanced bowler, then you need a reactive.. they're made to hook giving you better angle to the pins reducing the chance of leaving a split...

Since I dont know you, I really cant give advice on this, but go to your local pro-shop.. If your a regular bowler there and he knows you then he could give better recommendations.... Almost all balls are reactive now but then some hook a lot some hook less, making some ideal for oily lanes or dry lanes, and also has to do with your style (are you a cranker -- just muscling the ball all the way through, or a stroker where you just let the ball do the work???) So, you really need to talk to him.. Also even if he doesnt know you he will watch you bowl a few...

Anything made by Brunswick. They have bowling balls ranging from plastic (lowest hook ratings) to reactive particle/resin balls that will hook the most. Their price ranges from around $50 up to $185, so there will be a bowling ball for any skill level out there, and they have been a reputable manufacturer for quite a long time.

I vouch for their equipment's performance and durability because I've exclusively used their bowling balls for over 25 years, since I started bowling junior leagues up to my earning a Professional Bowlers Tour membership card. Not saying that everyone can make it to the pros, but that's how good their company is.

round goes without saying. Make sure it's heavy. But not so heavy that you can't lift it.

And really wide.
