To "fertilize" is such a broad statement. There are so many different fertilizers - all of which produce different results or have different affect on the plants they are feeding.
Depending on where you live also dictates what fertilizer at what time of the year.
If you are living in a zone where you will be going to fall soon, you should be using a lawn fertilizer that does not promote top or green growth, but rather one that has a high last number - sort of the vitamin pill in the fertilizer - and that will encourage the grass to develop strong roots and thus help it make it through the winter. If you are going into a dry spell, the same theory applies. However, if you are going in to a wet, growth period - then it is AOK to feed with a high first number and encourage new growth.
Good to note that nitrogen promotes new growth but not neccessarily "green" growth. It is the Iron in a fertilizer that makes the grass green. So look for that when next purchasing your lawn fertilizer. Also good to know your soil Ph as fertilizer does not work well with a low ph thus calling for an application of lime.

I prefer St. Augustine grass. It will choke out the weeds and overcome all other crummy grass. Be sure and fertilize it at the proper time. I don't know where you live, but a lot of people prefer blue grass. I hope I helped. I use Miracle Gro for almost all my gardening.
