In the late '50s, I moved for awhile, with my parents, from Los Angeles to a very young Las Vegas. I was still an only child back then.

We were staying someplace with a pool outside, and one morning while my parents were asleep, I went out by the pool, and for some reason, threw my doll in the deep end. Needless to say, I immediately wanted my doll BACK, and I can still remember standing there staring at the deep water, trying to figure out how I could retrieve her. After all, I couldn't swim yet - I was only 3! I guess I must have made a sensible choice, as I didn't drown that day.....!!!

When I was two, we lost everything in a fire, and I can actually remember standing outside in my pajamas watching our house burn down. That's awful, huh?! But it's my earliest memory. What's funny is that I can clearly remember that, but I have a hard time remembering stuff when I was older like five or six. For instance, I can remember starting first grade, but I don't remember a lot from that year.

Around 4 or 5...a giant elm tree outside our house, my oldest sister dressed in surgical gown and mask (she was in nursing) and the old family car (wood side panneling). I think our memories are sometimes put in place after the fact by viewing old photo albums. To be clearer I agree with reichman below...my memories begin roughly around the same time and have more of a generalized flow, this is just the one image that stands out as a snapshot.

The earliest I can remeber is when I was two. My mom and oldest sister took me to sears. I saw this yellow monkey. I had to have her. My sister got her for me. Her name is Monk Monk. I still have her to this day. My sister is now passed on. I would not trade that memory in for nothing.

My memories start from about 3 1/2 years old, and none of them are traumatic. They are simple things, dinner with the family, going to te store with my mom, etc.
