I remember the application stating that a background check would be done (Credit, legal, references, mode of living, work ethics) but it did not specifically say (unless I read it incorrectly) it would check income.

No, and the only information your previous employer can give out is if you worked there or not and for how long. They cannot volunteer any information, legally. They are not allowed to verbally slam you, or say you were a bad employee. If the asking company asks specifically how many days a year your were absent from work then and only then can your previous employer give out that information. Even that is a little risque and most of them wont do it.

Your income will not appear on any credit check and no sane employer will reveal this information on a former employee.

JUST IF THE CHECK WITH THE IRS, AND I DONT KNOW IF THEY CAN LEGALLY DO THIS.
