It said that I needed to update my system security, but I have a feeling that it was just a bougs intrusion alert. Ideas?

It sounds like spyware.
Goto www.ewido.net and run the free version to find and remove it.

I do not consider these messages bogus and take them all seriously.

You should most certainly update your system security and immediately run a scan.

This is a bogus form of adware. It is trying to get you to purchase a worthless program.

You need to remove this adware. Go here and follow this procedure to set up your computer. Then setup and use the programs she lists (she tells you how to set them up).

Make sure your virus scanner is up to date and run a spyware scan. If both are good, it was bogus.
