There are several methods...

- Go to a hardware store and look for 'kits'. These usually are two different paint, one of which has additional chemicals to make it crack and peel.

- Paint it, and then wipe off the paint, so it collects in the cracks and crevases of the piece. You might wet the wood before hand to raise the grain.

- Paint like normal and then distress it with tools and sandpaper. Hit it with lengths of heavy chain or light taps with a hammer to give it dents and nicks. Use the sandpaper on edges and in areas that would show a lot of wear (around handles, etc). For a really nice effect, paint it several times, using a different color each time (waiting for it to completely dry between each). Then the different colors will show through as you distress the piece.

paint it in whatever color..then take sand paper to it, especially on corners and edges...sand some of the paint off. Then take a brown acrylic paint, dilute it...brush it on with a foam brush or roller, then wipe with a rag to get excess off. Try it and then experiment with more sanding
