I have just started to scrapbook my photos and memories. I have digital photos that I can print out for albums with a more recent theme. However, I want to make a scrapbook of earlier memories, where I only have original photos.
Should I:
1) Use the original photos
2) Scan in or get copies of the photos so that the originals are still kept in traditional photo albums
3) Something else...........
Any tips would be appeciated. I read somewhere that you should not use original photos unless you have the negatives. As the whole point of scrapbooking is to preserve memories, I am not sure why I would need to be this cautious.

Guess I should have proofread this! It should obviously say 'Scrapbooking' at the top there! Oops!

I sometimes use original photos but often I want to alter the size of a photo or repair a crack or mask something out so scanning it in is useful. To alter the size I often take a few black & white photocopies at different percentages to see what looks best in my layout before I print a good copy to use

You should make a copy for your layout. So you can practice cutting when your happy with what you are going to glue then use the original. Older picture (especially the paper it is printed on ) gives your pages more depth. It really makes a true history book. But if you are going to use originals make sure you story your album in a safe area away from direct sunlight, heat, cold and all that jazz...have fun

I have started scrapbooking too and I am using original photos even though they are special - using acid free paper. It is a lovely way of recording the past for future pleasure. Also it will make it so much easier for future generations to follow 'the stories'!

I have done a scrapbook three years ago using original photos and they are still good as new, I also have added pictures of flowers, animals , children i found in magazines and newspapers, i added stickers of butterflies, birds, hearts and such, I drew a few things with colored markers, I have used a stencil kit to make Fancy lettering . I wrote poetry under some of the pictures and a section with just my thoughts,

No reason why you shouldn't use the original photo as long as you are using acid and lignin free paper, and anything you plan on putting round the photo or sticking on the photo. Most people would recommend using a copy, especially if you are a beginner, just in case you make a wrong cut or something.

Scrap booking is an excellent way of preserving memories, but i think, you should scan and then print out copies, which can look as good as the originals anyway, then keep you originals safe!

Personally I use the originals, then I know they remain intact...use acid free papers etc. though.
No harm in scanning them onto your computer though. you can even make a cd of them.. then you've always got a copy just in case.
have fun.
