brink of a political coup? Perhaps even Civil War.
Could we be playing into the hands of those who would revel in our discord, indeed capitalise on it?
In short, has "New Labour" failed? Is there any redemption for their "instability" (D. Cameron)?
Which is our way forward (our democratic right to choose... consider)?
Discuss..

Personally, I don’t believe we’re on the brink of civil war; It’s not going to happen...
However in answer to the second part of you’re question, back in 97’ labour promised so many things that just haven’t done and with these promises managed to get poor schmucks who wouldn’t normally vote for them roped in along with the people that believed in their policies. Ever heard the saying “One bad egg can rot the whole barrel”? This is exactly what happened here, a few bad eggs pushed and pushed until the promised policies went out the window...

I rather think for our own benefit, a "coup of sorts" would be a good thing and is needed here in the USA. I"m not sure where you hail from (England?) but here in the USA, it would appear that mainly due to apathy, hopelessnss (political) and minds dulled/obscured by too much TV and religious zeal can't fathom what is the failings of a once great civilization and successful concept of government: ie Democracy.
Others before me have suggested that the culprit that has brought America down has been consumerism. That is, in order to get stuff, one has to work all the time to make $$$$$ in order to buy that stuff, purchase a place to put that stuff, have a vehicle to get around in to get all that stuff back to your place and so on. There's less time for family, friends and taking care of political biz by interaction, when one's focus is on only one main thing ...making money, everything that is going on around that focus can dry up and blow away. Democracy as has made this country great is no longer with us.
Americans have become so focused on having stuff, becoming consumers, that they have forgotten about policing their own government and it's actions. Good or Bad ...you decide.
What has happened is that large corporate manufacturers and merchants have lobbied and bought out the American goverment. Most of our internal woes come to us compliments of this particular oversite. Illegal immigration, corporate misconduct (Enron etc.) and the war going on in the middle east currently. The war aspect is a bit convoluted to describe how and why but consider our meddling (by our government spurred on by corporate oil interests) with the likes of Saddam Hussein, O. Benladden, The Saudi's early on, all for the benefit of controling and having more oil to "consume" in order for profits of insanely, high amounts to a few priviledged oil execs, who one would have to believe, feathered their own nests by "buying" the ear of the leaders of our country and our government.
Ever wounder why so many of our recent presidents have come out of Texas, aka. Oil Country. Ask yourself the question, what are the odds of a father and son both becoming president and being from one state, Texas. If this doesn't smack of some kind of conspiracy by a certain group of highly influencial people, then I'll admit to being deaf, dumb and blind along with the rest of you.
The only answer/solution that I can imagine out of this downward spiral is to require things like illegal immigration to be halted dead in it's tracks ASAP, give the opportunities to Americans to earn decent livings (that is stop paying or allowing CEO's to take home billions of dollars in profit while others in the US starve or go without basics) Eliminate campaign contributions or favors by anyone and enforce the laws.
Their are a miriad of other things that need to be changed or adjusted soon or all will be lost. It may be over even now.
I hate to say this but if a revolt by the American populace doesn't occurr soon to change these things, it's probuly time to pack your bags and leave (emmigrate) to some other country where people still practise the old fashioned form of Democracy. I'm not sure it can be found on the planet however at this time due to the overwhelming tendecy by American business people toward greed in the name of Democracy ...under the auspices of Captitalism.

I think it already happened, at the 2000 election. It was the perfect time for a transition.

A Coup does not need the Marks Brothers running around in period Mexican costumes.

The key to me was James Bakers 1000+ page brief for the Supreme Court.

Sure you could expect the Bush Brothers to help each other. But Baker having access to the High Court on short notice and walking in with his brief already prepared. Blew me away.

I worked for Law Firms that appealed cases to the Supreme Court. It is almost impossible to get a case heard and it takes years. For James Baker to waltz in and get a decision that put Bush in Office was more than an accident it was Coup D'etat

New labour never succeeded in doing anything except conning people who did not believe in Labour values to support it. As with all "successful" political parties they are ultimately destroyed from within because of the betrayal of their own members by the leadership.
