That is a sad fact. There are a few human conditions that predispose us to that. Here they are:
1). We almost all subscribe to the idea of a "pecking order" and want other people to make the hard decisions for us.
2). We almost all at some time believe that there is cosmic significance in our lives and the way we feel about them.
3). We almost all believe that we have control: that by being good, we can make the universe good, or by doing wrong we can damn ourselves from salvation. It fulfills a basic need to have power over one's environment.
Of course, since you and I know this, we're concerned over the implications of transcendentalism. What about your life? I think "If you were meant to transcend it, what is the point of even living anyway?" That doesn't make sense. No God that wasn't a child would do that, personally. I imagine a God worth believing in put you here to live, not daydream about him all day.

Well, apparently there are idiots on this Q & A that believe in Vampires, Warewolves, Witches...You say you feel surprised because people believe in God! You must be kidding! Why should you be surprised that people believe in God. A Faith that gives them hope. I did not have a slave, My grandparents did not have a slave, My greatgrandparents did not have a slave.. I am so SICK of hearing the SLAVE Crap. My grandmother is WHITE and had to quite school in the 3rd grade to work the fields. 3rd Grade!! She is now 89 years old and is smarter in life and bookwise than a lot of people I know. She has a good life, a great family and a deep belief in GOD! GOD BLESS HER!

I don't really see your question here, but I understand your observation. I believe it takes all kinds of people to make a society...probably the more diverse the better.
Many folks derive much comfort from ardent belief in God/gods...something bigger than oneself. Someone once said God is an imaginary friend for adults...OK, so be it. He is still a friend that will never go away and you can attribute powers to him/them/it. You can share the responsibility for your life with a more powerful entity...and in many cases this enity will save you from our most scary future reality...death. Life when truly contemplated is quite remarkable, unimaginalble (even though we are in it), unfathomable, and kinda scary. Many can't face this alone. Even the aloneness of life is unbearable to many so they jump on the God/god band wagon. And it is just as valid a life as any other since there is probably no real purpose to life anyway.
Sorry to hear about the trouble in your family...crappy when family screws family, but it happens everywhere.

Well we have to respect everyones believe I think. Personally I am agnostic so I don't believe 100% or deny 100% the existence of god coz it simpliy cannot be proven right or wrong.
As for those who believe, I think that it is lack of education and societal binding is the reason why they have such strong believes, They almost never question it and once they do I think that they will not believe in god that strongly.
I always have this one question. Did we make god or did god make us? I mean humans probably created god so that they have something they can blame on when bad things happen instead of just acknoledging that its life and no one controls it.
I still can't definitely tell you but this is what I think.
I know it pisses you off but you cannot make someone who believe in something to unbelieve unless you can prove it.

Being a believer and a follower of God means that you are to fully educate yourself on His laws. You are to try your hardest to follow those laws. And you are to tell others about Him. If everyone believed whatever they wanted to believe in and never talked about it, things would be worse than they are now. Our religions set boundaries for us and help us with moral decisions. My definition of moral and immoral might not be the same as yours. When a man has sex with a 13 yr old I may believe that's immoral and you may think it's ok because he says he loves her and she never said 'no' to him. Are we then just suppose to ignore it and let him continue to have sex with her and maybe some more girls? No! It is our duty to discuss what is moral and immoral and set limits and set punishments for it. We have the right to speak, to listen, to agree and to disagree. We just have a hard time doing it in a civil manner. I see adults fight like children when a toy is taken away from them. The adults are immature and disrespectful. Too many of us are aggressive and that's wrong. Fighting never solves a problem, it causes more problems. You also say that we give too much to God. I don't think we give Him enough of our time. An hour a week at mass doesn't cut it. We should be thinking and worshiping God and talking to others (civilly & maturely) about Him all the time. He created us, that's the least we can do.
God doesn't come down to earth Himself and talks to us. He talks to us through other people and through the nature that He created. He punishes us sometimes by creating diseases, natural disasters, having the choosen people speak out with the people who aren't believing in the truth thus starting a war, etc. We see this in history all the time. We just choose to either dismiss these signs as "mother nature" or thru scientifical explanations or we question why God did this to us and we get angry with Him. He has the right to do this, He is God. It is in our human nature to not want to be punished and to not want to be told we are doing something wrong. The real problem with this world and the humanrace (in my opinion) is that many people have decided to stop listening to God's laws and decided that they know more than God does and decided that they have the right to make laws that will protect them and punish others. Humans can be immature cry babies. Cry babies throw temper tantrums, yelling and screaming and refusing to listen to their parents. They don't like what their parent told them and they think they know best. I bet you know some people that are cry babies. Instead of being aggressive we should be assertive.

You have a good observation. I am a devout Christian. Just because you aggressively worship God (someone or something) doesnt make you a fool. You can worship God and be wise too.

The idea of a Godless world scares religious people. Also, people don't understand why you don't believe which will turn into aggressive behavior. Sorry about the stuff that happened in the past, but that has nothing to do with religion.

If you don't believe in God ..my dear, this belief in you is created by God only.
It is not the question that whether God exists or not. In fact, the reason for all existence in creation is God.
If you go on asking question "why" on any subject matter the final answer you reach is God.
It is good that you believe in performance, perseverance, and work as the base of success. God wants the same from you. We are to survive and protect the creation of God. God helps our honest performance.
Even the epics and mythological stories show that those who worshipped God for mere want of more and more power to rule only or to practise evil deeds agaianst the creation of God, were finally destroyed by the persons who worked in favour of creation.
You must have even noticed that the Mythological heroes were not only famous for worshipping God with mantras and all but they served the creation and protected it from evils.
Think of Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Don't think he earned fame only for his style of worship. In fact, his philosophy of life and its small but significant stages and facts illustrated a path of peace, wisdom, psychology etc. So even Swami Vivekananda, one of the most intelligent, logical person was convinced by his school of thoughts and left home to enrich the feelings of Humanism in Mankind.
Even the Calvinist ethics of Protestans also believe that you have come to this World to prove that you are chosen by God for Heaven.
Now, about worship you can say, it is a part of a meditation process. The rituals are disciplines, many times some rituals proved to be scientifically logical.
The people who lives their life with envy, greed and hatred would fight for property and other worldly things because they forget their duty. They forget their role in the Creation.
But, what I think you hate to be an Orthodox type, and against all sorts of aggessiveness involved in the process. In that case I would say that you don't even need to follow any rule to worship. Your work is worship. Your belief is your worship. Your honest intention is your worship. Your good deeds are your offerings.
So, if you work to save, protect, enrich, beautify the creation and its beings, you must be working for God.

I completely agree. I think that the idea of God is a fantastic way to assign blame. If someone dies of a tragic illness, for example, it is not God "taking their spirits", it is the cause of germs, bacteria, and other nasties. Also, if there even was a God, he's not doing a good job of taking care of this planet.
