Women have all the eggs they will ever make, in their lifetime stored inside their bodies. Every month, after coming to sexual maturity, an egg is released from one of the two ovaries, and travels to the uterus to await fertilization. Inside the uterus there is also a sort of "bed" for the egg. If the egg were to be fertilized, it would attach itself to that "bed" and the "bed" would be it's source of nutrition and connection to it's mother until the time of birth.

When the egg isn't fertilized, the uterus cleanses itself of the unused egg and bed, and this is a woman's period.

Every month a new "bed" is created for a newly released egg.

During the female cycle, the uterus makes itself ready to receive a fertilized egg by thickening it's lining. If an egg does not get fertilized and implanted in the uterine lining, the lining sheds. That shedding of the uterine lining is the actual period.
