They're not essential,... but are highly recommended,.. when they're worn, and with the speakers of them right next to the ear, it will prevent any problems with feed-back usually caused by proper PC speakers, (the sound travels from the speaker directly to your mic, down the internet out of the-person-you're-chatting-withs' PC speakers and back to you again,.. = feedback),.. so; I'd say; yes,.. buy headphones; they're great at preventing bad sound issues, they often sound clearer for chatting, (verbally), via the net and they're also great for keeping your conversations quick, less hassle typing long sentences etc, and are also a whole lot more private....

No, you do not need headphones. All you need is a microphone and speakers.
However, headphones will help because the microphone will not pick up your voice, but also the sounds of the other person speaking through the speakers. This can cause an echo on their end.
Any headphones will do. Use old Walkman headphones if you have them around.

No. But you do need a mic. you can use the speakers on your PC to listen to the other person.

You need to buy a microphone. You can plug in a headphone and speak to it. It will act as a mic if you are too cheap to buy a real mic.

You need a microphone too.
Not necessary to have headphones if you have speakers but its better to get a headunit which includes a microphone AND headphones as your microphone won't pick up the sound from your speakers!
