Suppose you have a 3-month moving average. The middle of those three months is the center. To start, take the first 3 months of data, average it, and place the average at month 2.

When the fourth month is available, delete month 1, add month 4, and average months 2, 3, and 4. Place that average at month 3, and so on.

If you're averaging an even number of months, such as 6, the center will be right in the middle between (in this example) months 3 and 4. Everything else is the same.
