I'm black as well. I use to believe the hype about buying ethnic makeup and such. Well, as it turns out, makeup companies make everything in every shade. It really just depends on what you're looking for. I'd go to your local department store and just look around and ask questions. I found that Fashion Fair was too red for my complexion even though I'm fairly dark. I tried Iman when I first started wearing makeup years before and I never liked it. It was also too red for my tone. My lighter mother (where I get my yellow tone from) uses Lancome. It works very well for the both of us. I've also used Artistry through Amway. Their color palate is really expansive so that's why I get my blush and eyeshadow from them. My advice is to experiment. Go with a trusted friend or parent and have a professional go through it with you. Just explain to them that you're going around looking for good products and they should be able to help you.

I just started to wear makeup every day. For me, it's only to take off the shine so I don't look like a oily 19 year old (I'm 24). I use a loose powder in the morning, a thickening mascara, and a little lipstick and then I touch up with a pressed powder in the afternoon. I visited Elisabeth Arden, Fashion Fair, and Lancome before going with Lancome. My friends at school use MAC and Avon. So, it's different for everyone. Don't believe the hype.

Iman, created by David Bowie's supermodel wife, is a top brand especially for women of colour. I have seen this in all the big department stores on the big makeup counters and the products are absolutely stunning. You can browse the range and find a stockist at www.imancosmetics.com

She has also written a book that is dedicated to the art of cosmetics for coloured skin called The Beauty of Color and you can see this on the website too.

Sephora. I am Mexican and pretty tan and I was talking to the lady who worked there who was black and she was telling me how its so hard to find makeup with a red undertone for people of color, because when I get concealer or anything it usually looks chalky or has a yellow undertone and just doesnt look healthy or natural. But there is a line there called "s m a s h b o x" and they have a creme to powder foundation that works very well. I am color 3 but they have a great selection and if you are looking for eyeshadow or lipsticks they can always help you out, give free samples and try it out on you to see how its looks. They have a great selection of not only makeup but moisurizers, facial cleansers etc. So have fun!
