My wife loved it.
"Deranged by rejection, Ingrid murders the man, and is sentenced to life in prison. White Oleander is the unforgettable story of Astrid's journey through a series of foster homes and her efforts to find a place for herself in impossible circumstances. Each home is its own universe, with a new set of laws and lessons to be learned. With determination and humor, Astrid confronts the challenges of loneliness and poverty, and strives to learn who a motherless child in an indifferent world can become. Tough, irrepressible, funny, and warm, Astrid is one of the most indelible characters in recent fiction."

I think there might be a little bit about sex in there...It's about a girl whose mother kills someone and she has to go stay with foster parents. I really liked the book, it's far better than the movie. I suggest picking it up if you're not against a little bit of sex.

the book does have sex in it. but even though it does it is an extremely good book. You learn a lot from it by the way the girl realizes who she is and how to deal with her mother in jail. she goes from foster home to foster home. you see how the world is this terrible place but some times it has small places of joy. i would recommend it to you. it also has some cussing but it's hard to find good books that don't ya know? well i hope you try it.

It was disturbing, in my opinion, to see how a mother could be nutty enough to do what she did, and leave her child.
I thought the true story "Blackbird" by Jennifer Lauck was much better.
