in football, can you choose which side to work on if you have no playing experience.?

i'm asking in terms of becoming a coach. one of the top offensive minds in football never played the game. this guy has 3 or 4 superbowl rings-3 as an offensive coordinator and is the current head coach of the notre dame fighting irish

It would be difficult. Coaches tend to play people where they can use them imediately rather than where they have the best potential. And how can you know which side you like without playing.
