It's only a big deal to people of "older generations" -- I would estimate 60 and above, because my mom's best friend is 71 and she refuses to wear white after Labor Day. That was the custom she grew up with, and back then, it was truly considered a social/fashion blunder if you wore white. (Sounds very amusing to us younger generations, eh? Personally, I think there are much more important things to worry about!)
I also think it has to do with what part of the country you're from, as this friend is from Illinois and apparently the "no white after Labor Day" is the biggest deal in the Midwest, and also in the South. At least that's what I've concluded from my (small amount of) research into this topic.
Here in California, no one seems to care -- even the older generations -- probably because in many parts of California, we have mild weather year-round. A few "holdouts" who refuse to change still refuse to wear white after Labor Day, but really, most Californians don't care.
Actually, if truth be told, I think most people ANYWHERE in this country don't care, except for the aforementioned stubborn holdouts. *grin* They're entitled to feel that way, of course, but I say the following... wear WHAT you want, WHEN you want, as long as you feel good in it, and as long as it keeps you comfortable in whatever weather you're experiencing. Think for yourself and don't let strangers or arbitrary rules tell you what is "right" or "wrong"!! :)

There isn't a big deal, anymore. It used to be that white was considered a summer color and Labor Day signalled the end of summer (though it is actually about 3 weeks later) therefore all white should be put away until next year. Now, people wear white all year long and I see no reason why they shouldn't. If you still have concerns about wearing white post Labor Day, wear winter white or off white!

There isn't one anymore. This was a way for the very wealthy to distinguish themselves from the non-wealthy. It was a "hidden" fashion statement, and is no longer in effect. It was considered a fashion "faux pas" decades ago but is now so commonly known that it is considered a joke..."What? White after Labor Day?". That's the big deal, and it isn't a big deal anymore. The very wealthy now wear pretty much what they please - and if you were the very wealthy wouldn't you?

White is considered a spring time and summer color, therefore after labor day when its considered that summer is over because everyone is in school and the vacation period is done. The act of wearing white a summer color is a fashion faux pas.

I wear white all year long. As a matter of fact, I especially use my white purse in winter!
I think that was a thing of the past... white color is clean and sexy.

It used to be a big deal... people don't really care anymore.
White is a summer color, black and darker colors are more for fall.
BUT... you can always find really cute white pants on sale around now... so I say go for it!

Actually, this old fashion "faux pas" is no longer in effect. That unspoken rule was done away with a few years back. You're good to go. :)
