Well, a very brief and vague overview...

1. The big bang happened. The universe expanded rapidly, from almost nothing to the size of galaxies in a trillionth of a second.
2. The universe then became very hot because of this expansion. The heat turned the universe into basically plasma, which made it really soupy and this started to create elementary particles like quarks.
3. the universe then began to cool rapidly, since there was nothing to keep it hot, and this caused elementary particles to group and clump together randomly and this formed the first complex particles like protons and neutrons, and eventually atoms.
4. From these atoms eventually hydrogen and helium form in the universe, making it a big huge mass of gas. Large clumps of these gasses eventually formed what are called nebulas.
5. Nebulas collapse to form stars (nebulas that are small enough, larger ones formed). From here, eventually stars began to supernova and spew heavy elements, and some stars collapsed to form the first black holes.
6. Black holes began creating large gravitational disturbances and the super large nebulas were pulled in and this began to form the galaxies.
7. From here heavy elements formed by the supernovas began feeding the black holes to form many galaxies and left the rest to float out randomly and be pulled in by different stars gravity, which formed the solar systems.

From what I understand right after the big bang, it inflated really fast under immense heat, then it slowed down to allow galaxy-stuff to form. After that (which is the current phase) the Universe is speeding up again creating new space as it goes.
