Many animals can survive quite a while without a decent meal

In order to maintain homeostasis, we must eat regularly to receive energy. The calories we get from the food are then used to try and maintain a constant body temperature, as we are warm-blooded, and all other body processes that help keep us alive. However, we can survive for a little while without food, depending on how much fat or energy is stored up. Metabolism might have something to do with it, too.

Other animals, such as reptiles, are cold blooded and require less food to stay alive. For instance, some reptiles sit out in the sun to raise their body temperature, instead of creating the heat themselves, and some rarely move unless they are hunting, like crocodiles. Snakes, for instance, are able to eat huge meals at a time that can satisfy them for weeks on end.
I hope this answers your question.

people do not require such regular amounts of food compared to other animals

some animals need to eat way more often than humans in order to survive

an adult human can live for weeks without eating

the main difference is, that people have more choice and tend to eat when they want

I have gone 48 hours without eating and it was uncomfortable but not dangerous or unhealthy

Herbivores need to eat almost constantly.
Carnivores can eat irregularly because eating meat is a lot more efficient.
Ectothermic animals don't need to eat as often as they absorb heat from the environment rather than generating it from burning calories.
Humans can adopt the feast/famine pattern of eating but in the developed world we tend to eat whenever we feel like it, which we can due to agriculture and trade.
Hunter gatherer societies and nomad groups do follow the feast/famine pattern of eating however.

I'm not sure but I imagine it must be related to metabolism. Perhaps we expend energy quickly and need to have a certain amount in reserve.

On the other hand perhaps we gain a great deal of pleasure from food and just enjoy eating.it. I know I do.

So can we. We just don't like to, so we feed ourselves. Humans can actually survive on less than half the amount of food they eat, provided they don't exert themselves. Also, we're warm-blooded, so we have to burn more energy than cold-blooded animals.

Do animals go to work? We need food as a fuel, less you do the less you eat.

we don't really live in conditions that we need to go days on end without eating so we haven't adapted that way right
