Pruning is usually done in the fall and winter months. When it's cold.

It's recommended that most trees be pruned in the fall. I usually do major pruning at that time, when the tree goes into it's dormant mode. Minor pruning, I do whenever it needs it.

You can prune them after all blooms have dropped. Minor pruning to correct the shape can be done anytime.
