I've driven from Colorado Springs to Santa Fe, New Mexico. For the most part it isn't bad. The only thing you have to watch for is Raton Pass which is on the border of Colorado and New Mexico. It could get really nasty due to the weather and some times they close it. When you do decide to travel it stop at some truck stops along the way and ask if they have any road reports on Raton pass. Usually they do and it will let you know if the Pass is ok or not.

Straight down I-25. Figure 6 hours. Figure on snow over Raton Pass on the NM border. From Las Vegas, NM, on to Santa Fe, it feels more like driving in mountains than driving on prairie.

It's somewhat boring. The terrain gets a bit rugged as you get into New Mexico, but it's still a relatively easy drive on the interstate unless there's a blizzard (in which case all bets are off). I'd suggest downloading a free copy of Google Earth and have it show you the drive if you really want to see what you're up against.

You can't avoid mountains between those 2 cities. If you go in October, you're less likely to get bad weather, but it's still possible.
It is, however, a very pretty drive. Especially if you take US 285 through the center of the Rocky Mountains.

One of the most senic drives I have ever taken. Watch the weather reports for northern NM. They get huge amounts of snow fall but probably not that early. South of there will be OK!
