I hear a lot of you ladies saying that you checked your own cervix. How did you do that? I'm not trying to be mean or anything. I just want to know, and what are you looking for? It may be a dumb question, but I really want to know :)

Well, I haven't heard of anyone checking their own cervix, and I have 3 kids. I don't think it's safe to do, for one, because of germs that could contaminate the baby. 2nd, you really don't know what the stages of dilation feel like, so it wouldn't do you much good. My advice is just wait for your doctor to see how dilated you are, and good luck with your pregnancy!

I have checked my own cervix. It is a good idea to get familiar with your body :-)

What I do is wash my hands really thoroughly, then insert 2 fingers as high as I can (I have short fingers). When I am in the infertile part of my cycle, my cervix is very firm and closed. When I am fertile, it is high, I can barely reach it, and it is soft and open.

A good book for learning about your cycle is "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. It talks about all of these things.

It is perfectly safe to check your own cervix, as long as you wash your hands. Your immune system is used to your own germs. It's actually safer for you to check your cervix than to have a lot of other people messing around in there. The gloves they use at the doctor's office in the box on the counter are NOT sterile. And if you think a doctor's office or hospital are a "sterile environment" you need to think again. They are NOT 100% sterile, just ask the cleaning crew. ;-)

Since this is posted under TTC, it sounds like you are wanting to check to see if you are fertile, as opposed to checking to see if you are dilating?

SHOW means you are fertile.
Your cervix is.....
soft
high
open
wet

Soft.....
Your cervix normally feels kind of firm, like the end of your nose. It will feel softer, more like your cheek, when you are fertile.

High......
This is by comparison. If you are checking on a regular basis, the cervix will be higher up and more difficult to reach when you are fertile.

Open.....
The os is the opening in the cervix that leads to your womb. It will feel like a small circle in the middle of your cervix and you'll be able to feel the small hole. When it is closed, it will feel more like a little dent than like a hole.

Wet.....
You'll have lots of cervical mucous when you are fertile. The best kind is "egg white cervical mucous" which is stretchy, basically the consistency of egg whites.

I've found that the best way to reach to check your cervix is usually either sitting on the toilet or standing up in the bathroom with one foot up on the side of the tub. Obviously, use clean hands and it's a good idea to trim your nails so you don't hurt yourself.

You CAN also check your own cervix for dilation and effacement during pregnancy if you want, as long as your bag of waters is still intact.

I didint know you could check your own cervix. I think its weird and I don't think I will ever check mine. I rather make an appointment with a professional who knows what they are doing in a steril environment.

It's not a dumb question. It is not recommended for women to check their own cervix. Just a hint, the cervix is at the other end of your vagina.
