CPU is the Central Processing Unit. Heard of those terms like Pentium 4? Intel Centrino? That's what people look out for, because that determines the speed of your computer.
A picture of it could be found here: http://www.zdnet.co.uk/i/z/rv/2003/01/wtlf-pc-cpu.jpg

RAM is Random Access Memory. You'll require RAM to run different programs simultaneously: that's why you are able to open up more than one internet explorer browser when you use the program, and use MSN Messenger at the same time. To explain how RAM works: it's a temporary storage for programs that are being currently runned by the computer.

Hard Drive: Where all your data and programs is stored. It's like a cabinet full of the items you'll need. That's where your programs and files are stored.

So basically, to explain how the computer parts works togehter: when you run a Microsoft Word program, your computer will extract both the word document from the hard drive and run it on the RAM.

CPU - central processing unit, where all the calculations are performed Ram - Random access memory. Virtual work space. The more the beter Mother Board - where CPU and Ram and other stuff is attached to, Hard Drive - stores information Memory - same as Ram, stores information for a short amount of time Storage - what a hard drive does CD-Rom - reads cd's DVD-Rom - reads dvd's Floppy Drive - reads and rights info on floppy disk Optical Drive - what cd roms and dvd rom drives are Usb - universal serial bus - port to attach external units that do other stuff ie. memory cards, card readers, mp3 players etc

CPU - this is the processor. Examples are an INTEL Centrino or AMD Turion

Ram - This is temporary memory. It gets "erased" when you turn off the computer.

Mother Board - This holds most of the components of the computer.

Hard Drive - This is more permanent storage (when compared to ram) This will still be there when you turn off the computer.

Memory - Another word for RAM

Storage - Another word for Harddrive

CD-Rom, DVD-Rom, Floppy Drive, Optical Drive - All forms of storage that can be easily removed and transferred from one computer to another.

USB - Stands for Universal System Bus- Its a type of physical connection for wires. It replaces a wide variety of older connections.

CPU- heart of the computer, does all the processing
RAM(memory)- memory needed to run applications
Motherboard- base unit, everthing is connected to this
Hard Drive(storage)- internal storage area, including the operating system
CD-ROM- reads CD's
DVD-ROM- reads CDs and DVDs
Floppy drive- you can save files on a floppy and take them with you
USB- type of connection, can be used to plug in mouse, keyboard, etc

CPU-the actualy processor/computer
ram-memory that helps speed of computer
mother board- runs the computer..a main component
hard drive-physical memory of files
memory-storage
cd-rom-play compact discs
dvd-rom-play dvd movies/videos
floppy drive-plays floppy disks..pretty much obsolete
optical drive-i think its a flash memory key, more up to date than a floppy drive
usb-serial plug

those are pretty much ideas of what they do...but, i didnt like doing my own homework, so i wont be doing yours..go to www.yahoo.com and look them up..its not that tough..it'll take a whole 20 minutes
