when they would be furious at the government for banning interracial marriages...?

i'm not racist. i'm just making a point that if you can discriminate for one reason, you can discriminate for any reason. there needs to be a zero tolerance policy on discrimination, i think.

i can't believe i am being accused of comparing two dissimilar things, when ignorant jackasses are comparing homosexuality to the rape of children and polygamy. if you think that those are in any way similar, then you are terribly misinformed and amazingly stupid.

being gay is the way that you are born. much like you are born of a certain race. people who choose to rape children are sick people.

Because some people in this country think that their lifestyle is the only one worth living and anyone who disagrees should be denied basic human rights until they change.

a couple of answers..

they believe it's not discrimination, because we would all have the right to marry... someone of the opposite sex.

they also believe that homosexuality is a choice, or depraved, I've even heard "public health hazard", so they don't believe they have the right to be homosexual in the first place

of course the same argument could be used, "everyone has equal rights to marry... someone of their own race"

they don't understand the concept of a constitutional republic rather than a direct democracy... they feel lawmakers are not doing their jobs and not paying attention to them when they fail to ban people from living the lifestyle which at least on the surface is acceptable to the majority.

to the post directly below mine, this is ludicrous, they will never legalize marriage between anything but consenting adults. as for multiple-partner marriages, it is something the government has an obligation to allow as well, due to its religious and cultural background... really the only solution is to separate, legally or at least in your mind, legal, government marriage, from what you consider to be marriage according to your religion. if that means calling it a civil union, I guess it's a possibility, but I am Not Religious and I am Married, because marriage is more than just a religious institution, it is cultural. I want my marriage to be called a marriage and I think homosexuals and polygamists deserve the same. If you don't want to recognize them as married, you can say whatever you want about them behind their backs, more power to you.

Let me answer your question with another question. Where does it stop? Should we let people marry 10 wives? Should we let people marry their goats? Would we let people marry infants like they do in the middle east? What if a 12 yr old wants to marry a 45 year old? It has to stop somewhere.

I'd mention religious reasons but then people would throw sticks and stones at me so I'll leave that one alone.

***I don't have to say anything behind anyones backs. I think homosexual marriage is wrong. Marriage is between a man and a woman. I due believe that we will eventually open the door to homosexuals and the list will go on from there. It's called "human rights". It's your right to do whatever you want without restraints as long as everyone is consenting. Isn't that were we're headed? So I happen to be religious and beleive sin is sin. So I am automatically called names and blah blah blah. I have my opinion too. Apparently lotsa other people believe homosexual marriage is wrong. I'm not telling anyone how to live their lives. Call it a civil union if you must but I think marriage should be kept sacred.

Sure you think they will never legalize marriage between anything other than two adults but 30 yrs ago you'd have been called a fool to think homosexuals would be allowed to marry. Times change. I know that. People will end up getting what they want, desire, lust, and crave. It's a fact of life. I'm not blind to it. I just have my opinion about the matter same as you.

As a functioning and somewhat civilized society, we have to set standards or parameters, or there would be chaos. Regardless if someone is religious or not, some things are not a good idea. I may have gay relatives and friends, but that doesn't mean I necessarily agree with their lifestyle, just as I wouldn't expect them to condone some deviance of mine. If they choose to lead a certain lifestyle, that is their choice- there are sacrifices that go along with that. One of them being you cannot get married. It's not discrimination, it's common sense. Marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman, the way God meant it to be. By the way, the moral basis for our beliefs is the Bible, which I believe is the how-to manual from the Creator. It tells us not to do certain things for a reason. We have to follow it- not purposely defy God by making laws of the land against it.

I have no idea.

People are stupid. If marriage is so "sacred" why is there a 50%+ divorce rate?

People descriminate against outgroups (groups that they are not a part of) for a lot of reasons. Basically, they are too ignorant to understand them and treat them as ordinary humans. But, its not really their fault. They were not raised the way educated folks (like us) were, and will take many generations to change, if they ever change. They will sooner agree with their priest than with reason; then they falsely misinterpret the bible to use it against their outgroups. Little do they comprehend that according to their own religion, God would condemn them for making such a judgement of other peoples behaviors. Would God really send the whole country to hell if the majority of the country said that gay marriage is okay? Believe what you believe, that it is wrong, and let it be legal; what is different? You didn't make a lot of gay people angry, thats all. You can still go to heaven if you condemn it even when it is legal.

*sigh*

It makes me sad that the only two things in the universe that we can understand as infinite are the size of the universe and the stupidity of people.

Because some people think they have the right to enforce their personal or religious dogma on everyone else as a matter of law.

Marriage is a legal status, providing specific legal benefits and obligations. Denying those legal benefits to couples based purely on their gender is nothing more than gender-based discrimination.
No different at all than racial discrimination (see first link).

If specific religions or churches don't want to recognize the legal status, there is no requirement that they do. That's the whole concept of separation of church and state. The church has its own records and keeps its own religious statuses, and the state has its own records and keeps its own legal statuses. One cannot control the other.

For more detailed analysis, read the essays linked below.

{EDIT to ilovemydog} There's a very simple line to draw where it stops. Two unrelated adult humans.

All the current legal rules regarding marital status are written for two adult humans. And because husbands and wives already have the same legal rights and benefits, gender already doesn't matter. So, nothing changes in the laws by elminating gender discrimination from the rest of the process. But anything beyond that requires massive rewrites of hundreds of laws, not just changing the registration forms

It's not discrimination. Your analogy doesn't hold up to careful analysis.

In the case of interracial marriages, the marriage is still between a man and a woman. In the case of gay "marriage" this isn't true.

Moreover, it's not the case that the government is banning them, but by not recognizing them it's upholding the sacremental God-sanctioned union between men and women.

Nobody asked me. If homosexuals wanna get married and , uhmmm,,divorce or stay married, thats fine. Men and Men is biologically wrong, as is Women and Women, biologically wrong. It doesnt hurt anyone else, if it does, well thats cause others were taught to hate what they cannot understand.
I know I was raised that way, but I dont hate homos anymore. What I do not like is the Political Correctness of all that junk, I can say ****** now, but it is wrong to say Fag. go figure.
