I'm assuming he posted this question to YA (I didn't see it, myself).

Yahoo did that to promote the site.

The people who answered weren't so much catering to his ego, as trying to boost their own. They wanted to be picked by him as having submitted the Best answer because it would tell them that they are more important than they feel they are.

Even submitting a response makes them feel closer to him.

As for him, he is famous; among other things, that means he can point and draw attention and possibly money to whatever he points at (figuratively). That he uses that power to draw attention to an excellent plan (if the one he's been promoting is the one I think it is) for cut extreme poverty in half in ten years, well, that's a pretty good use of his power, and I have no problem with that.

Beats putting out yet another line of perfumes, and the other sorts of sludge that famous people pour into public discourse.

Because your question gets hidden in the bowels of Yahoo Answers and the odds are that not that many people will see it. Do you really need an answer to this question? We all know that world hunger is an issue and whatever we can give to aleviate this problem can make a difference. It does not matter who calls this to our attention. That is not the issue. Let's focus on the spirit and the intent of the call to action.

how about you get a job, and if you have one, stop playing online at work. take the money from that job and feed the hungry people. You could start a garden in your yard and give the food you grow to the less fortunate...there are many things you can do, just doing something is better than complaining and doing nothing.
