Follow the water and hope I'm on the North American or European continents, since most of their "wilderness" areas have resort towns built on rivers and lakes.

If there was a river, I'd follow it downstream. Rivers mean food and water and are natures bathroom. And if you follow a river long enough, you will find back to some sort of civilization.
If there's no river and I had a compass, just pick one direction and walk this way until you find people or a river (and then see option one)
If there's no river and no compass, I'd check out the trees and see on which side of the trunks the moss is growing. For some weird reason moss only grows on one side (I think it's north, but doesn't really matter anyways) and then follow that direction until ... see option 2.
And if there's no trees or rivers or nothing, I'd be in a desert and I don't go there in the first place (-:

There are some great books"how to survive in the wilderness" and a program called Survivor man that address that very subject. read those survivor books and learn what plants are edible and how to make fire, look for fresh water, and kill food. practice making different shelters as a kids project. I made a fire-pit in my back yard and cooked dinner for grandsons they are adult now and still talk about it. Always be prepared and buy yourself a GOOD MULTI-TOOL AND KEEP IT WITH YOU.I got my survival books on amazon.com they have a good selection.
