I would say that if both parents are working, there are two factors contributing to eating out more. 1) Neither parent is home during the day. If neither parent can start cooking until they get home in the evening, the family can't eat until unacceptably late, so they eat out. 2) With two incomes, the family can affort to eat out more than a single income family.

That's easy...The family with two working parents generally have more money to spend on eating out than a single parent who has no choice but to cook most nights. Stay at home moms/dads cook more because that IS their job, to take care of the house.

If both parents are out working, who is at home cooking? The statement you made is pretty much a hypothesis. Now look for facts to support that statement.

When two parents are working and they have children, time is of importance to them. Often times when my husband and I are working, we find it much easier to stop at a restaurant with our children after work to rest our bodies and allow our family time to talk about our day, together. Because we are not home we don't have interruptions like the phone ringing, and no-one is knocking at our door. Going out to eat allows me to have extra time with my husband and children, as I don't have to worry about getting more groceries, fixing a meal, cleaning up and doing dishes afterward. That means I get to spend approximately 2 hours more with my family each evening. If the children have after school activities my husband and I will attend their activities and then go out for dinner.
When we all get home, we focus on homework and getting ready for the next day and of course bed-time. It's the only way we can survive in today's fast paced world.
Had I been a stay at home mom, I would have had time during the day while the children were at school, to go out and get the things I was going to need for the evening meal.
On the weekends I do spend time cooking for my family as I then have time.
Good luck on your project!

Families with both parents working have less time in the home, therefore my (your) hypothesis is that in such families they eat out more than in families where one parent is a stay-at-home parent.

Because I don't like cooking and cause both my parents work they have no time to fix food, so it's easier to buy something out there, plus it's horrible to start cooking when you're starving.

this should be very, very obvious.
when both parents work, there is less time to prepare a home-cooked meal, and they're more tired at the end of the day.

Yeh it is true, when my mom was jobless, we stayed ate at home almost every night. Compared to eatting out almost everyday when both where working.
And when I was young, i saw it over and over again.

You answered your own question. If both parents are working they probably have more disposable income than disposable time.
