There is no one particular chemical formula for coal.
It is mostly carbon, hydrogen - with the degree of saturation being pretty low (i.e. it is mostly carbon). You can view it as CnHm, where n is a high number and m is relatively low.
Notable impurities are sulfur and mercury (amongst other trace metals)...most people don't know that most of the mercury that is emitted into the atmosphere is from the burning of coal.

Coal doesnt have a simple or even mildly complex chemical formula. It is made up of a "chicken wire"-like structure, of carbon rings. Therefore, when many people talk about coal, they just say it is made up of carbon.

that article should give you some good information.

coal is made up primarily of carbon and other elements. there are different types of coal thus, the chemical formula will depend on what specific type of coal you want to know.

Coal is a mixture of several thousand different chemicals. The empirical formula is probably something like C16 H40 O8 N4 S2 P. (this is a guess, don't quote me on it!) It'll be mostly hydrocarbons.
