Diesels are great for mods. You can in crease the air flo with items such as intake systems, turbo back exhaust systems, and aftermarket turbo's. You can use a propane injection systems, water injection, and engine management systems,. There are drive line modifications like and external overdrive and if you have oversized tires you can also change the ring and pinon gears in the differential.
I Have a GMC 2500HD and with a realatively inexpensive kit from Banks which included exhaust, intake, and engine managememtn chip i am averaging about 20MPG but the best gain is pulling my 30 foot enclosed trailer i average about 17mpg.
