That's a great theme for your assignment. There is so much controversy here! I think any great literature is realistic about the human condition, life, and interactions among people. So it's granted that violence will be present in literature, especially good literature.

However, there is also literature that strives to make violence appealing to readers. I don't think that's very helpful for readers, or very respectful of writing as an art form.

If good literature includes violence, the writer should also point out the consequences of violence.

Good luck with your assignment. I know you'll do great!

Violence in literature has been around forever; read the Iliad. Reading (and writing) is one of the ways in which we try to make sense of the world, so violence in literature is a way of understanding the part that violence plays in our world. Fictional violence can also serve a variety of emotional purposes, from providing a vicarious release to allaying fear by putting violent incidents in perspective.

It means that we as humans like violence. We may not all like to live it in our daily lives, but we at least like to read about it. If a book of fiction didn't have at least a little bit of violence, no one would read it because it would just be too boring. Heck it wouldn't even be published. Books that have a lot of violence are the most popular. Just look at the bible for proof of that.

Violence is a part of life. If you ignored it in literature, you woul be leaving out something that effects more people and things than possibly anything else. It doesn't necessarily mean we like it, but that it exists and we have to deal with it.

Violence is, sadly enough, an inherent part of human culture. Fiction is a mirror of the human condition, so naturally there will be violence in books.

I prefer my violence to advance the plot, however- NOT to be gratuitous.
