The process for changing the name is fairly simple, but the details vary by state.

Normally, there is a form you file with the local courthouse or the department of records (sometimes called department of vital statistics). The form will have further instructions on it.

If neither the courthouse nor the department of records handles that process, then contact your state attorney general's office.

There is also the federal paperwork involved, for changing the name on your social security records. Contact the Social Security office to get that form.

you can go to court and petition for a name change.
or you can write every jurisdiction ever encountered and tell them as of this date, you are now using the name schnicklefritz instead of whangdoodle.
i did this years ago and never have had a problem.

Coragryph is right, the process varies by state. I'd start with my local courthouse if you don't want to contact the SS office right away. Good luck!

You need to file a petition with the courts. If you are not doing it to commit fraud, there should be no problem.
