Does my refrigerator need to be completley non functioning to get a replacement under my home warrenty?

My home warranty policy provides the carrier the option to replace or repair at their discretion. Believe it or not, they chose thus far to replace the entire ice making mechanism, the condensor and the compressor. The combination of the labor and the parts for these items totalled more than the $2800 we paid for the fridge. Also, my warranty provides for reimbursement of the food inside should the fridge/freezer fail and they cannot get a repair technician out to fix it within 4 hours. Read the fine print, on mine it is on the back and requires a magnifying glass!

This is the way it works for my company. You call the service. They check your policy. If major appliances like refrigerators are covered they give you the name and number of a repairman in your area. You call the repairman and schedule a visit. The repairman says either 'We can fix this' or 'Too much wrong' In the first case, you pay your deductible and they fix the old machine. The second case, they call the warranty company and arrange a replacement machine. Not hard.

Both answers one and two are excellent. This is the way most of the homeowner warranties work!!
