Everytime I put my son down for a nap, if he has a bowel movement he reaches into the back of his diaper and smears feces all over himself.
I don't know what to do! Do other children do this?

My daughter's 23 months old and I had the same problem. In her case I think it's because she's uncomfortable when she has a dirty diaper (maybe he feels the same?). I have to start potty training soon, she's starting to let me know when she goes "pee-pee" or "caca". Try to have him fully clothed in onsies and pants, it worked for my daughter. Introduce him to the potty, have him see you (or daddy) using the toilet, and let him know what you're doing. So instead of playing with the poop, he'll let you know when he's poopy. After he's seen you go "potty" a few times have him sit on his potty (especially before nap time). Good luck....

What you're mentioning is a normal, though odd, childhood behavior. It happens to many children. Why, because it's something they are curious about because it came out of their bodies. To them it's just a new experience. They don't understand about germs like we do.

My Autistic son used to do the same thing for many years. For him it was as sensory issue as well as being curious. He used to put it over the walls instead of washing it off his hands. It was horrible. BUT they usually do out grow it.

When this does happen, don't freak out or say negative things to your son. Just "help" clean him up. You can always give him a warm washcloth, hold him near the mirror, and say "lets get this cleaned up" Take his hand and help him.

Don't worry, he should out grow this curiosity soon enough. If it continues after a year or so, then you'll need to find out why he's doing this, but for now...just let him know that we clean up after this. If he starts to grab for his diaper when he's not alone, distract him with something better to do.

If he craves the feel, make up some kid safe playdough in your kitchen. Let him help add the ingrediants. For my son it was the feel and texture that attracted him. He's now fully over this phase.

I have heard of this. None of my kids ever did it but a friend of mine had a daughter that did. Not sure what to tell you other than maybe check on him throughout his nap (every ten to fifteen minutes) to make sure he hasn't had a bowel movement.

Yes all kids like to do this especially little boys. Sounds like he is ready for major potty training, if he isn't already. All I can tell you to do, is keep and eye on him and get to his diaper as soon as you can. You have to explain to him the it is nasty and bad, and when you see him reaching into his diaper throughout the day, tell him no, he will learn not to do it, if you stay on him.

A couple of my friends kids have done this. Thankfully, none of my 3 did :) That would definetely be a sh!tty job to clean up!!!!

Try putting him down with a one piece outfit on or put on a diaper shirt under his outfit. And if you don't have anything, try pinning his shirt to his pants.

Good luck!

We are currently studying this is Psychology...this is what I found (by Sigmund Freud). Not sure if any of this makes sense, but I thought this could help...

The anal stage in psychology is the term used by Sigmund Freud to describe the development during the second year of life, in which a child's pleasure and conflict centers are in the anal area. This stage is exemplified by a toddler's pleasure in controlling his or her bowels. This is second of Freud's psychosexual stages. According to Freud's theories, inability to resolve the conflicts of this stage may cause anal retentive or anal expulsive fixations.

"As the physical ability to control the sphyncter matures (2-3 years of age), the child's attention shifts from the oral to the anal zone.

"This change provides further outlets for libidinal gratification (anal erotism) and for the emerging aggressive drive (anal sadism).

The concept of fixation kicks in here. When there is excessive gratification in this stage, it leads to the development of extremely generous, unorganized personalities. When gratification does not occur, the individual becomes extremely organized.

My nephew loves doing this, whenevr he can get at his nappy he will play with what's in it. I can't explain why, it doesn't seem to bother my sister, she just takes his hands away and tell shim he's being bad. And cleans him, obviously!

You son's not the only one that does it so don't panic, but if you're really concerned, talk to a nurse or doctor about it and see what they say. At the very least, yuou'll have your fears put to rest professionally.

put him in 1=piece sleeping suit so no access to diapers. TALK to your doctor about it. I heard Autistic kids are smearing pooh all over the place (please don't think your kid is autistic!!!! - I just mean that there might be a medical condition that needs to be treated!)

Other kids do this...he'll outgrow it. Try waiting to put him down for a nap until after he has pooped and been changed.
