As others have said, depends on if you're a true Harry Potter fan, meaning you've read the books, or if you're only going by the pieces of the books that show up on the screen. Check out the Yahoo User Movie Reviews for Goblet and you'll see the highest grade a reader of the book gave it was a D+. Others gave it A+

For book readers, Sorcerer's Stone received a lot of As, in fact more A's than F's.

My side is, having read all of the books, and being very, VERY irritated and beyond skeptical when Sorcerer's Stone was being made (how dare they put my imagination on the screen! Never could they match the Hogwarts or Professor McGonigal I had in my head) I was BLOWN AWAY! Everything, right down to the sign for Gate 9 1/2, was identical to what I saw when I read it. And nothing was added! But then came the Goblet...I will never see another Harry Potter movie again. It was down right disgusting and insulting to Rowling's brilliant work and her enthralling clear stories on so many levels. This pitiful flick was a kick in the pants. Embarrassing that people thought that was the entire story when it was barely a needle in the haystack.

It depends who you ask, because there are two very different groups of people: fans of the books that watch the movies or fans of the movies only.

Fans of the books seem to like Prisoner of Azkaban the best because it is darker and edgier than the first two movies, yet stays pretty true to the book (unlike Goblet of Fire) but without feeling too rushed. And, it is exciting with the threat of the escaped prisoner of Azkaban coming after Harry and the Dementors that can not only terrify you, but suck out your soul! Harry, Ron, and Hermione are teenagers, but aren't yet troubled by romantic complications. Harry gets to meet two of his parents old friends, who tell him something personal about them that he didn't know before. Lupin is their first nice and useful Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, Hagrid becomes a Professor, Hermione stands up to Draco, the Hogsmeade trip is funny and interesting, Harry learns the truth about Sirius and is able to rescue him.

But, for fans of the movies only, I'd say that Goblet of Fire is the most popular. The story is basically about high school, friendship, romance, a big dance, teachers that can be mean, so even aside from the magic and the main storyline it is good on that alone. The students are teenagers: they feel nervous, jealous, angry, infatuated, embarrassed (everyone can relate). And, without knowing what material has been cut or changed, they aren't disappointed with the differences from the book. Also, it is full of funny scenes and fantastic visual images: the Quidditch World Cup, the dragons, the lake in the second task, the demonstration of the Unforgivable Curses, the return of Voldemort, Death Eaters being summoned, Priori Incantantem.

I think they were all excellent movies. However, as far as really being excited to see the movie, on an 'I can't wait' basis, the first one - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, takes the cake.

It was so great to see the characters portrayed for the first time, and to see the Harry Potter universe from the books we loved so much come alive. It's fun to watch it again now that there is such a huge difference in both the actors and the characters.

As far as US box office performance, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone also wins here. This one earned a cumulative gross of $317,575,550. The Goblet of Fire comes in 2nd with $290,013,036, Chamber of Secrets is next with $261,988,482, and finally The Prisoner of Azkaban earned $249,541,069.

Goblet of Fire is the most popular with people that have not read the books. However for people who have read the books I would have to say the first movie was the most popular because it was so insink with the book.

Goblet of fire.
The story and its characters are more mature, the movie is so packed with action and visual effects, and it seems to have had the best plot so far (and longest running among all four).
Book 5 Order of Phoenix has a lot of promise to tell...so probably next year, I will have a different answer already =)

I think it is Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone.

It was the first, and it gave us the ability to really see what JK Rowling was describing. It gave us a look into a make believe world that I think we all secretly wish we could be part of.
