Stay friendly, offer price matching, keep reasonable prices, offer a variety of items the customers buy most, do a special service that the big companies don't serve. Put offers out to make people come to your store more often. Treat every customer as if they were family. Make employees understand the concept of absolute friendliness no matter what, always smile. Etc. I don't know if this was what you're looking for but either way it all can be applied in a good way to keep your business strong.

If you offer the same product at the same or higher price, you probably will get kicked out. That's business; that's capitalism.
You have to market yourself so that you are either set apart from the retail giant or, in the alternative, that you augment their product line.
Location is also important. The easier you are to get to and do business with, the more people will be willing to pay for your inventory.
So, find some way to distinguish yourself. Service? Location? Quality? Support? Ease of transaction?
Also, watch the kinds of stores that open near big box retailers. Usually, they offer either parts and services for products sold by a retail giant.
There are some things a retail giant can't do. Find out what those things are and whether they are marketable in your area.
And if you still can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen.

The most successful tactic that I've seen, is to challenge their impact on either the local environment, community infrastructure, or both. Conversely, visit a local store and see what it is that they do that you don't and vice versa. People will pay more for availlability, quality of mdse, and quality of svc. Another approach is to see how you can cut your pricing to become more competitive. Maybe you're buying too much inventory at a time, or maybe you are buying through a distributor when you could be buying direct from the mfr. Maybe there are some changes that could be made to the personnel or to incentives.

You need to add-value that the retail giants don't provide to keep your customers coming back. It's a free market out there. Adapt or go away.

Grassroots political organization. Pass parish, county, city,or town ordinances that ban big box giants, or require they pass a vote by a majority of the population in order to build same.

You can always contact national activist groups such as "walmart watch" they have had some success in deturing walmart from destroying local, family owned stores.
