I'm assuming you're talking a "home connection"; if so..read on.

You basically have two options without involving your local telco. Cable and satellite.

Cable is a broad band connection that gives you the distinct advantage of all the time connection and superfast transfer rates.

Satellite has the advantage of faster than phone transfers but some satellite setups require the "send" be over telcom and the "receive" comes in via satellite signal. Some satellite companies offer the send and receive over satellite; this is the better of the two..but is not offered all the time. It depends on the service provider.
The wi-fi suggestion is unrealistic in from the prospective that you'd have to hope you lived close enough to a company or individual that you could "steal" a signal and jump onto their service...that's the first reason...but the more compelling reason to dismiss this out of hand is simple...it's illegal. It's virtually no different than pirating a cable companies cable service.

If you're against having a home phone, its possible to get a verizon computer card that acts as dial-up, but needs no land line because it pretends its a cell-phone. Otherwise, just get cable internet.
