Isn't $10,000 a bit steep for a few pieces of colored fabric, even if it is silk? Is there something terribly difficult about how they are made?

For comparison, a 3 meter by 4 meter Persian carpet can take as long as a year to weave, but you can get one for a couple grand.

More detail: A hand-woven, silk, persian carpet, that takes more than a man-year of human work, is much less than $10,000.

$10000 for a kimono is extremely steep unless it very old and/or hand woven etc.

I would consider $10,000 a very reasonable price if the kimono is made by hand. I would expect that the silk is hand-dyed and/or painted. Once upon a time, kimono were considered works of art, each one very different with no copies made.

Silk just don't grow out of trees like cottons do... The process of collecting it from the caterpillars is very delicate and tedious... Thus the extremely high price for it...

For that price, the kimono most likely would have been made by hand. Plus they're imported from Japan - everything there is expensive.
