I dont know how old it is, it was in place when we moved in 5 years ago, I cant seem to get any hot water out of it - ive just had a cold shower which is not nice, and one of the lights says 'overheating'.

It cant be overheating, ive not used it all day. It said this as soon as I turned it on.

Does it simply need replacing or should I get a man in to look at it?

turn it off for an hour it may be the thermostat and its not releasing-then if ur up for it -shut it off and drain out the heater-see if its built up with sludge-it should be done yearly-try and dig it out-then
if all else fails call a repair man-but make sure u already been to a good store at least by phone so he if need be will be putting in the one u order at a better price -if he names a higher price or lower quality heater-thanks david in Jesus amazing grace

It sounds like you are talking about an electric shower rather than one that works directly from stored hot water from your plumbing system.

If it is it will probably be the heat exchanger which is a small chamber that slows down the incoming water and allows it to pass over a surface that is heated by an electric element.

They are replaceable but unless you know what you are doing it could be dangerouse as the incoming water will probably be mains presuure and the incoming power could 6-9KW maybe even more.

A new one may be cheaper it depends on who you get to do it.

If it is not electric and gravity fed or pumped form the hot and cold plumbing system it may need a new thermostatic cartridge or if it has filters themay need cleaning (Like on the Hans Grohe Models) in which case it may be better to call some one in.

I hope you know a good reliable trust worthy plumber and I have not bored you too much.

to be honest showers are so cheap you'd be better off getting a nice new one. Whats the point in spending £75 on a plumber when you'll be left with an old shower.

the thermostat is broken.. its job is to cut the power off at the element before you burn yourself!

it sounds like it thinks it is too hot all the time and is killing the element all the time.. showers are usually full of nonservicable parts so i usually end up replacing them as a matter of corse.

it either needs a replacement heating element inside, or, the shower head is blocked and needs a good clean, which should be done regularly!

Yes, do have it looked at, don't do it yourself. I tried that once and it ended up costing me 5 times as much.
